Fan Tan is an old game of cards, in which players attempt to be the first player to fill up their pockets of all cards they play. The 4 7s are typically the only ones that can still be used in the beginning. After the 7 in each suit is used, the 6 & 8 may be used, then followed by A (high) and K (low). This is considered the earliest variant of the game. Sir Richard Williams translated it into English in 1815. It was then popularized in England by John Murray Smith and the “Lord” who we recognize as William Shakespeare.
The initial objective is to allow the winners to stay within the “high” sevens while the loser must go to the “low sevens”, otherwise called the “blooms”. Once the players are at a halt, they can switch cards to make an entirely new deck. Continue this until all cards have been exhausted. Fan Tan, the earliest version of the game we are familiar with, is what we have today.
Fan Tan is usually played in pairs or groups of two. One player is the highest card in a group while the second is the lowest. They then alternated between them. If a group is larger than four, it is usual to divide the pairs into single cards and each player playing two pairs at one time. In short, the rule is that the pairings are fixed and Fan Tan is played in the same manner as in the case of pairs.
In a variety of variations of fan-tan, the sevens are normally played in the same way. Fan-tan also allows the sevens to alternate on the table’s center instead of being placed along the edges. Fan-tans with sevens in the center are called fan-tans, or just fan. These are also more commonly known as “smooth” or “even”.
It’s possible that the word “fancan” originated from the Middle East, where fans were believed bring luck to the people who were using them. As a result many people would go to a fancan (or fan-tan) parlor. The establishments were famous for their special rituals that involved holding a fan above the head and exhaling steaming hot air. It may sound strange to some, but in the past people began to refer to the sensation of heat as fantasan or fantine.
The popularity of fan-tans eventually increased to North America, and to less extent, to Central Europe. For instance, the coins of Portugal were often imprinted in specific designs that reflected the rich culture of the country. For instance, a fan-tan with the image of olive leaves, or the Portuguese flag were particularly popular. In time there was a personal coin circulation established. This means that residents of the area would exchange coins regularly from one pile to the next. Coin collecting and placing coins in different piles led to the creation of what we now know as a standard fan tan.
Although the exact origins of today’s casino game of fortune telling isn’t known however, it is probable that European gambling games like the Tan Na Card influenced the birth of the modern casino game. The card was introduced by an Chinese general who sought to create an interconnection between the West and East. Similar to the modern game, players would stand on the Fan Tan waiting for cards to fall in an array of colors that represented the zodiac. A player would be aware when the cards fell in multiple divisions they were about to change.
The westerners brought with them the idea of the concept of Fan Tan due to the impact from the growth of gambling. Although the majority of European players prefer playing Chinese-style games, English and Dutch are among those who have played the dream. These Chinese games featured jousting duels, which is essentially an alteration of the Chinese fan-tan.
